Yogyakarta International Airport
Yogyakarta has been a major tourist destination in Indonesia alongside Bali. It used to be a military airport but since a long time ago it was changed into a commercial airport. Since then, Adisutjipto International Airport in Sleman Regency has been one of the busiest airports in Indonesia.
Since Yogyakarta has been trying to boost its tourism, the need for the commercial airport has been rising because of overcapacity. Thus, a new international airport now has been opened and operated by Angkasa Pura I since April 29, 2019. YIA is located quite far from the previous airport. It is located in Temon, Kulon Progo Regency. The first arrival was a Citilink flight from Jakarta’s Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport.

Before the opening, the authorities ran several simulations to ensure the security, safety, and comfort of the passengers. Supporting transportation has been simulated as well such as Damri bus, taxi, and private vehicles. Now, the development of the YIA nearly reaches 100% completion.
YIA spans over 528 hectares where 359 hectares are airside, and 223 hectares are landside with 3.250 meters of runway length. Airside facilities including rapid taxiway 1, holding bay 1, parallel taxiway, exit taxiway, and the apron. While landside facilities such as a terminal building of 12,000 square meters, supporting buildings (such as the Flight Accident Aid and Firefighters building, cargo and airplane expedition, mosques, Main Powerhouse, and administrative buildings).
However, during the beginning of its operation, YIA will only serve domestic flights including Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, and Air Asia Indonesia. The international flights will take longer preparation to land in YIA, while domestic flights have been preparing especially during fasting and Eid al-Fitr.
YIA will be the third largest airport in Indonesia, the development plan expected 15 million passengers per year in the first phase, then will reach 20 million passengers in the second phase. When the development has been completed, YIA will be integrated with industrial and tourism areas.
To facilitate the passengers of YIA, various facilities are available such as executive lounge, kids’ zone, wrapping baggage, disability lounge, souvenirs shop, and charging spot. The executive lounge provides various facilities such as check-in service including baggage, all you can eat buffet, restrooms, musala, VIP Room, Smoking Room, and private boarding gate.

Intermodal transportation has also been integrated to support access to YIA. Indonesian Train Corporation (PT KAI) and Damri Public Enterprise have prepared access from and to YIA. There is also a nearby train station, Wojo Station located 5.1 kilometers from YIA with 5 to 10 minutes travel time. To get to the center of the city, passengers can go to Tugu Station from Wojo station with 40 to 45 minutes of travel time. A shuttle bus is also in the plan to transport passengers from Wojo Station to YIA.
The entrance access to YIA is more than capable to support millions of passengers with 8 car lanes, 2 bus lanes, and 2 motorcycle lanes. Meanwhile, the exit point will have 11 car lanes, 3 motorcycle lanes, and 3 bus lanes. Another access feature of this airport is the 1.042 flyover to the terminal and airport train with 3 lanes on the second floor. Those who bring private vehicles will also be accommodated with 161.562,33 meters square area to accommodate 1,872 cars.
There are 21 departure gates along with a waiting room for each gate, 10 travelators, escalators to get to the airplanes. To make it more comfortable, the designs are cultivated from the local traditions with batik as the main theme. Overview of the airport shows that batik pattern is being applied to the architecture. The plan also shows that local ornaments are going to be used as the design in various interiors and exteriors of the building.
